Political Ideology Overview Explained
The Political Ideology Overview provides a comprehensive analysis of the political leanings within your selected jurisdiction. By evaluating various propositions and measures, this overview offers insights into the ideological spectrum—from Very Conservative to Very Progressive—that shapes the local political landscape.
Interpreting the Ideology Bar
Each category within the Political Ideology Overview is represented by a horizontal bar that visually depicts the ideological leaning based on percentile rankings. Here's how to read them:
-
Center Dividing Line: The vertical line at the center divides the bar into two halves:
- Left Side: Represents Conservative leanings.
- Right Side: Represents Progressive leanings.
-
Colored Segments: The colored portions indicate the strength of the ideological leaning:
- Conservative: Bars extending to the left show conservative tendencies.
- Progressive: Bars extending to the right show progressive tendencies.
Calculation Methodology
The Political Ideology Overview is derived from an analysis of various propositions and measures within each category. Here's a breakdown of the process:
- Proposition Categories: Propositions are categorized based on their subject matter, such as Taxes, Bonds, Social Issues, Criminal Justice, and Housing & Rent Control.
-
Percentile Rankings: Each proposition has a percentile score that indicates how the jurisdiction's voting pattern compares to similar jurisdictions across the state.
- Percentile Below 50: Indicates a more conservative leaning.
- Percentile Above 50: Indicates a more progressive leaning.
- Adjusted Percentiles: For propositions where a "Yes" vote aligns with a conservative stance, the percentile is inverted to maintain consistency in ideology representation.
- Average Percentile: The average percentile across all propositions within a category determines the overall ideological leaning for that category.
-
Ideology Labels: Based on the average percentile, categories are labeled as:
- Very Progressive: 80.0 - 100.0
- Progressive: 60.0 - 79.9
- Moderate: 40.0 - 59.9
- Conservative: 20.0 - 39.9
- Very Conservative: 0.0 - 19.9
